Early detection of eye abnormalities is an essential part of maintaining healthy eyes. At Elite Eyecare of Abilene, we are dedicated to taking care of your vision. We keep up to date with the latest innovations in eye care, including retinal photography and optical coherence tomography.

These tests are not necessarily needed at every eye exam but may be recommended and performed in specific situations.

What is Retinal Imaging?

Have you ever wondered what the inside of your eye looks like? Retinal imaging gives you a high-resolution image of your eye’s interior. Regular retinal imaging can track changes in your eyes over time. If subsequent images begin to vary from the baseline, it can be concerning. Detected early allows your ophthalmologist to address issues early and recommend effective treatment plans.

When is Retinal Imaging Performed?

Retinal eye exams occur in addition to your regular eye exam. Depending on how often you visit the optometrist, you might not get an exam each time. For example, if you visit the optometrist annually to renew a glasses or contact lens prescription, it’s unlikely that you’ll have retinal imaging.
Whether you’ll get a retinal eye exam depends on several factors, including:
  • Eye health
  • Family history
  • Whether you are experiencing any symptoms

Retinal imaging can also detect diseases. An eye doctor may observe signs of the following:
  • Macular degeneration
  • Cancer
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Glaucoma
  • High blood pressure
  • Retinal detachment
  • Multiple Sclerosis
Further, if you have any of these pre-existing conditions, you might have retinal imaging performed regularly:
  • Diabetes: Patients with diabetes may experience damaged retinal blood vessels that can lead to vision loss.
  • Macular degeneration: The retina can deteriorate with age. Common signs include thin, brittle blood vessels or abnormal blood vessel growth beneath the retina.
  • Glaucoma: This eye disease damages the optic nerve and can lead to vision loss. Because the optic nerve is located in the retina, retinal photography can help detect this nerve damage.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

Like retinal photography, OCT gives a view of the retina but uses a different modality. Instead of photography, OCT uses light waves to capture a series of cross-section images of the retina. Being able to see the retina’s layers allows the eye doctor to measure how thick each one of them is. There are baseline retinal thickness layers that have been observed in “normal” eyes. Thickness measurements outside of the so-called normal range can be a cause for concern and a sign of retinal disease progression.   In addition to retinal photography, you can get OCT in Abilene, TX, at Elite Eyecare of Abilene.
